‘The year of the Cats’ is a GAA book dedicated to the unparalleled achievement of the Kilkenny hurling teams of 2008, in winning the Grand Slam of championship All-Irelands in 2008, coupled with the completion of the 'three-in-a-row' by Brian Cody's senior team. The unique quadruple of All-Ireland minor, Under 21, Intermediate and senior hurling titles, along with the county's second ever three-in-a-row - 95 years after the first - is chronicled in ‘The year of the Cats’, written by journalist Charlie Keegan, Gaelic Games writer with The Kilkenny Voice newspaper. The 160-page production covers the four hurling championships of 2008 which led to such unprecedented All-Ireland glory for Kilkenny. Charlie has gone right through the 14 championship games won by the Kilkenny senior hurlers from their Leinster semi-final win over Westmeath on June 10, 2006 in Cusack Park, Mullingar, to the completion of the three-in-a-row on September 7, 2008, with a stunning 3-30 to 1-13 final victory over neighbours Waterford. The book provides a statistical breakdown of the 14 championship games won by the Black & Amber in the assembly of the three-in-a-row, which includes the scoring contribution of each Kilkenny player throughout those three championship campaigns. There is an historical aspect to the book as the author visited the house at Dournane where the famous Doyle brothers – Dick, Eddie and Mick - of Mooncoin grew up. The Doyles won 19 All-Ireland senior hurling medals – a record which stands unequalled to this day in GAA lore. There are interviews with the four winning captains and the four managers. 'The year of the Cats'
contains an extensive photographic section covering all four All-Ireland
finals of 2008 and featuring the senior finals of 2006 and 2007.
